Deutsche Bank's Performance Moves Lower than Analysts' Projections

Deutsche Bank has reported a decline in profit for the fourth quarter of 2024, which exceeded analysts' projections. The decline was primarily attributed to legal provisions and restructuring costs, which affected the bank's global investment banking division. Net profit attributable to shareholders in the fourth quarter was €106 million, a significant drop from €1.26 billion in the same period the previous year and below analysts' expectations of €380 million. For the full year, Deutsche Bank's profit stood at €2.7 billion, down from €4.21 billion in 2023 and below the analysts' forecast of €3 billion. However, the bank's directors highlighted a reasonably strong operational performance, marking the fifth consecutive year of positive results after years of losses. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Deutsche Bank has experienced more losses than gains over the past decade.

H&M Sales Lower than Analysts' Projections

H&M, the Swedish retailer, has reported weaker sales than expected in the fourth quarter of 2024. However, H&M's sales are expected to rebound during the December to January period, excluding Black Friday sales from the fourth quarter. Sales for the quarter increased by 3% to 62.19 billion Swedish crowns, falling short of analysts' forecasts of 63.48 billion Swedish crowns. H&M has faced challenges in increasing its sales as it competes with Chinese online retailers Shein and Zara, who have outperformed H&M in terms of product sales. In response, H&M has increased its marketing expenditure and enlisted Charli XCX as a model for its autumn collection. However, analysts believe that H&M needs to make additional efforts to improve its financial performance.

UN seeks US$500 million in additional funding

The United Nations (UN) is seeking an additional budget of $500 million for 2025, with the aim of monitoring and investigating human rights violations worldwide, including in Syria and Sudan. The UN Human Rights Office is currently facing significant financial challenges due to budget cuts from its main donor, the United States. This reduction in donations to international organisations was initiated during the Donald Trump administration. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed concern that if the funding targets are not met by 2025, there will be inadequate support for those in need, potentially leaving them to struggle or fail. The request for additional funding highlights the pressing need to address ongoing and future challenges to human rights.
