Israel-Iran tensions peak, highlight at Canada's G7 summit

Tensions are rising between Israel and Iran, with a series of retaliatory strikes resulting in the loss of hundreds of civilian lives. There are growing concerns that this could lead to a broader regional conflict. It is estimated that Iran suffered at least 224 casualties as a result of airstrikes targeting its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. These were carried out by Israel, and in turn, Iran launched a retaliatory attack, resulting in fatalities in Israel, including children. The G7 leaders are meeting in Canada this week to discuss the escalating situation. The agenda includes preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, supporting Israel's right to self-defence, and promoting diplomatic solutions. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasised the importance of addressing the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, while US President Donald Trump expressed a positive outlook on the potential for a resolution. The international community is closely monitoring the developments as tensions between the two nations continue to mount.

Abu Dhabi energy giant seeks US$18.7 billion acquisition of Santos

Santos, Australia's second largest gas company, has entered into an agreement for a US$18.7 billion acquisition by an international consortium led by Abu Dhabi's National Oil Company (ADNOC). The aim of this strategic move is to establish a substantial global gas business. Santos' share price rose by 11% following the announcement, though investors remained cautious due to potential regulatory hurdles in Australia. The proposed bid values Santos at US$5.76 or A$8.89 per share, while the company's shares were last trading at A$7.72. This acquisition deal, including corporate debt, totals A$36.4 billion, making it the largest cash acquisition in Australian history. According to the analysis of Kaushal Ramesh, the bid is in alignment with ADNOC's strategy for expansion. The acquisition would grant the consortium control over significant LNG facilities in Australia and stakes in key projects in Papua New Guinea, viewed as valuable assets for Santos.

Iran-Israel Conflict Escalates, World Oil Prices Get Volatile

Following a 7% increase in crude oil prices on Friday, there has been a notable shift in market volatility, largely attributable to the resurgence of conflicts between Israel and Iran over the weekend. Concerns have been raised over potential disruptions to oil exports from the Middle East, leading to fluctuations in Brent crude oil prices, which rose to US$74.56 per barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices, which rose to US$73.36 on Monday. Despite briefly dipping into negative territory, both benchmarks closed 7% higher on Friday, reaching their highest levels since January. Analysts, including Harry Tchilinguirian from Onyx Capital Group, have underscored the repercussions of intensifying conflicts on energy flows, highlighting the fluidity of the situation. The recent military actions by Iran against Israel have led to heightened concerns among global leaders attending the G7 meeting regarding the potential escalation of the ongoing conflict.
