AS–Iran Near Peace Deal, Strait of Hormuz Poised to Reopen

The United States and Iran have reportedly reached substantial progress in negotiations over a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a peace agreement that could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important energy shipping routes. The statement was delivered by Donald Trump amid growing expectations that the three-month conflict may be approaching a turning point. According to Trump’s statement on social media, the proposed agreement includes plans to restore access through the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced major disruptions since the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran began in February. He added that the remaining terms and final details of the agreement are still under discussion and are expected to be announced soon.

Russian Missile and Drone Attack Hits Kyiv, Leaves Four Dead and Dozens Injured

Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Sunday (24/5), resulting in at least four fatalities and dozens of injuries. The assault also caused significant damage across several parts of the capital and surrounding areas. Explosions were reported in Kyiv shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time, following earlier warnings from Ukraine’s air force via Telegram about a possible launch of Russia’s Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile. However, Ukrainian authorities have not yet confirmed whether the Oreshnik missile was actually deployed in the attack. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that two people were killed and 56 others were injured within the city. Of those injured, around 30 required hospital treatment as emergency services responded to the aftermath of the strike.

Ukraine Claims Strike on Russian Oil Terminal in the Black Sea

The Ukrainian military said on Saturday (23/5) that it carried out strikes on Russia’s Sheskharis oil terminal—one of the largest in the Black Sea region—as well as a nearby Grushova oil depot. According to Ukraine’s General Staff via Telegram, the overnight attack triggered a fire at the Sheskharis facility, and a tanker named Chrysalis was also reportedly hit in the Black Sea. Ukraine has significantly escalated the scale and frequency of its strikes on Russian oil refining and transport infrastructure in recent months, aiming to reduce Moscow’s energy revenues that help fund the war. Drone forces commander Robert Brovdi stated that during the first 23 days of May alone, Ukrainian drones targeted 13 major Russian oil facilities.
